Latest news Nationwide League Division
Three Whilst City aquitted themselves well the
league leaders generally had the slight edge. In the first half it was
pretty much even. Gary Brabin produced another pile-driver which Mike
Politt in the Chesterfield goal could only parry. Mike Edwards did
exactly the same and briefly the ball looked to be rolling towards
the goal line but Politt recovered and grabbed the ball at the second
attempt. Musselwhite was equally as busy having to tip over
the bar. Nationwide League Division Three The Tigers are proving to be a diffcult side
to beat this season. Despite long periods of Darlington pressure they
could not break down City's defence and through two well worked moves it
was City who gained all three points. The game took a little while to get
going with both sides looking lethargic, but it was Darlington who almost
took the lead with Musselwhite having to save well at the near post. Mid
way through the half the Tigers finally came to life with three chances in
quick succession, culminating with a Clint Marcelle shot across goal
that went just wide of the post. But with the half drawing to a close it
was City who took the lead. A well worked move involving Whitmore, Harper
and Brown saw Brown lay the ball off for Gray Brabin on the edge of the
box. Brabin hit the ball perfectly, swerving round the
outstretched 'keepers hands and into the bottom corner. Nationwide League Division Three The Tiger's recorded their third consecutive draw, this time against ex-manager Terry Dolan. Despite the pitch being waterlogged in places, and with rain still falling, the game went ahead. Both sides had problems with the ball getting stuck in the water but it was City who probably had the better play. Theodore Whitmore was placed up front with Clint Marcelle whilst Mark Greaves returned in midfield alongside Gary Brabin and Steve Swales. Whitmore and Marcelle often combined well together, particularly in the second half, but the final telling pass was just not there and either the move would break down or Alan Fettis would easily save a weak shot. At the other end Paul Musselwhite had to make a couple of decent saves, one in the first half when York broke through, and one in the second when he had to tip over the bar . However, City's defence held firm once again, with Ian Goodison making one telling clearance off the boot of a York player about to strike. Nationwide League Division Three If City were fortunate to gain a draw against
Southend then they were unfortunate to only get a draw in this match.
For the bulk of the first half City made only a few half
chances. Thedore Whitmore had a shot blocked and Clint Marcelle
was caught offside when clear. At the other Paul Musellwhite had to make a
full length save from Kevin Henderson and a header from a corner went
inches wide. However, it was the dying minutes of the first half that City
began to make their mark. First Marcelle went clear only to have his shot
saved by Williams in the Hartlepool net. From the resulting corner Ian
Goodison's header hit the underside of the cross bar and rebounded down.
Then a minute later Goodison had an effort from 30 yards which
just went over the cross bar. Nationwide League Division Three The Tigers were lucky to get a draw out of
this game after an impressive Southend bombarded City's goal with corners
and free-kicks. Paul Musselwhite had to make some excellent saves to keep
City in the match. However, it was the Tigers who took the lead after ten
minutes. Southend had started well but City had had a couple of forays
forward. When a particular attack looked to have broken down John Eyre
ghosted in from behind a Southend defender to snatch the ball from him
only to be tripped inside the penalty area. Eyre duly took the penalty and
whilst the 'keeper got a touch with his legs the ball safely nestled in
the Southend goal. For most of the rest of the half City had to
defend frequent attacks by the Shrimpers, often led by ex-Tiger
Martin Carruthers, forcing Musselwhite to save well on a number of
occasions. City's closest chance came to Ian Goodison whose snap shot went
wide from inside the penalty box. |
